Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

The weather this week was not conducive to great landscape photography.  Your editor took a look back through his archives and pulled out this photo of Kāpiti Island taken from the Escarpment walkway on one of our stunning winter days.

A Word from...

There was a good gathering of CPCW members at the Johnsonville Bowling Club last night to celebrate the group’s 13th anniversary.  Rowena’ great organisational skills ensured that the evening ran without a hitch – great hospitality from the bowling club staff; superb food, as always, from Dunshea’s; unmatched generosity from our sponsors providing many prizes to raffle and generating some income for our group’s coffers.  There were many individuals who worked together with Rowena to make the night successful – thanks were expressed to them last evening.  But I must apologise for a glaring omission and offer a belated thanks to Mike Drain whose quiet demeanour throughout the evening allowed him to capture “on film” those in attendance.  Thank you, Mike, for taking on this role – and for the work required subsequently to “process” the images.  We look forward to viewing the fruits of your labours in due course – they will be greatly appreciated!

David provided me with his thoughts for the dinner before his departure for warmer climes – I don’t think he quite knew just how much warmer those climes would be!  Here are David’s wise words:

Looking Forward:

  • as we age, our abilities change…
    • the Pleasure Pacers pace more placidly
    • the Steady Steppers step more serenely
    • the Fast Footers foot-it less frantically!
  • Care and Consideration:
    • as we all age we need to be even more aware of one another than we are presently
      • those at the front of the pack consider those at the back – allow them to catch up; taking an opportunity for a rest; asking how they are
      • those at the back of the pack consider those at the front – not expecting them to continually wait; reappraising your own abilities – form a slower “group within a group” and taking responsibility for shepherding that group – including knowing the route, carrying a first-aid kit, and ensuring everyone makes it back safely; or maybe accepting the reality of how the accumulation of years and changes to health are affecting you and deciding to move to a different group – no shame attached.

And, from me, to summarise David’s message further – “One for all and all for one!!”

Walk Details for Wednesday July 29th

This Week’s Walks:

The walks are based around the parking at Linden Park – this parking is accessed from Gee Street, Linden.   This is a parking area we have used often in the past.

The walks start from the parking area at 9:20am.

PP Walk:  A 4.64km flat loop walk around the residential streets, and a path through a local park, all based in northern Linden. There are a couple of obvious shortcuts if any of the walkers do not wish to walk the full 4.64km.  You can see the walk here.

SS Walk:  A 6.47km loop walk, firstly taking in some of the hilly residential areas, then down to the flat and back to the start using the streets.  This can be shortened by continuing down Wilfred Street. You can see the walk here.

FF Walk:   A 7.24km loop walk that takes in quite a bit of the hilly residential areas with a return on the flatter areas.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking for all three groups is the Linden Park carpark accessed off Gee Street.

Coffee:  Nothing booked, but Daily Fix in the Outlet Centre, Tawa, is close and of course there are Simmer and Thyme back in Churton Park.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

Walk Schedules:   You can look at the walk schedule for July 2026 here.

Reminder:    Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Cancellations:   If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Walking for the Week of July 20th 2026:

A great turn-out of walkers on Wednesday to enjoy streets and paths on home territory.  Thursday’s foursome (+Red) battled the wind to accrue 5.5km around Johnsonville.  It was a close run thing on Friday, but Clint made a good call to push on with the walk despite an uncertain forecast.  There were 13 walkers across the two groups who walked 13km around Linden and Tawa and the tracks of the Wilf Mexted and Woodburn Reserves. Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz

Wednesday Walkers:

Firstly, a photo from one week earlier which did not make its way into last week's newsletter. This photo of the PP group, provided by Janet Tyson, is notable not only for the quality of the walkers portrayed,, but because all walkers are included. I understand that a kind passerby was behind the lens.
Bill gathered the FF in the middle of an intersection at the top of Woodland Road, Johnsonville, mid-walk. A risky venture, but no lives were lost.
This week's large group of PP were snapped by Rowena at the entrance to Amesbury School.
Having crested Waverton Terrace, the SS group deserved a break. Thanks to Stu Rowe for this photo.

Thursday Walkers:

Hue provided this week's photo of the Thursday team. Sadly, their late arrival meant that there were no sweet treats available at Nada to fortify them for the rest of their walk!

Friday Walkers:

Thank you to Wendy for this photo of the early Friday walkers. No further comment required from me!
Thanks to Clint for this photo of the later Friday group. Not a single "psycho" to be seen!!
