Newsletter - 10th May 2026

Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

This week’s banner image is courtesy of Gary.  It was taken at the lookout beside the top cable car station on Friday’s walk.

A Word from...

Well, doesn’t this weather play havoc with the hair!  The local walk on Wednesday was decidedly damp. Thursday’s walk was also local and Christine reported that they arrived at the end “looking a bit like drowned rats”.  At 7am on Friday, 23 walkers clung anxiously to their phones waiting for the walk cancellation. It never came! However, the decision not to cancel turned out to be a good one with an initial 30 minute hair wash in the streets of Northland being followed by a sustained blow-dry as the groups wandered through Thorndon and the Botanic Gardens.  (Ed:  If you walked on Wednesday you will have seen David’s new hair style and know that it takes quite some blow-drying!!)

If you missed it last week, please read the advert for the Anniversary Dinner further on in this newsletter and mark your diaries.

David Pegram, Convenor

This photo featured in last week's newsletter and showed three likely candidates for the role of "Short haircut models" guaranteed to test the skills of Daisy Jake! Photo courtesy of Margaret Ellis.
These two photos taken by Rowena and Alison show the miracles that can be wrought by the DaisyJake team. Scary, isn't it? Wait until you hear these geriatric heavy metallers at the Anniversary Dinner!!
This photo was taken by Jack Chan on the Friday walk one week earlier, but arrived too late to include in last week's newsletter. It proves that there were other candidates who might have benefited from a DaisyJake makeover.

Walk Details for Wednesday May 13th

This Week’s Walks:

Every year we head to Maungaraki for a walk and this coming week is that week.  The walks avoid the rougher tracks that are within the bush areas and keep to the streets and other paved areas.  The PP and SS walks are walks we have done before; the FF walk is a variation of a previous walk.

The walks start from the designated starting point (at the parking area outlined below) at 9:20am.

PP:  A 3.78km loop walk.  A bit of hill work, but not anything extreme.  All on footpaths.  You can see the walk here.

SS:  A 4.93km loop that also includes a bit of hill work and is either on roads or a formed walkway. You can see the walk here.

FF:  A 6.04km loop on hilly roads with sections of formed paths and steps.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking for all three groups is in Rowan Street. There are a good number of marked angle parks and, if these are all taken, there are kerbside parks on the adjoining streets.

Coffee:  We have told Benedicts Café that a number of us will be arriving for coffee and perhaps a snack.  Benedicts Café is within the Maungaraki Shopping area.  The alternative is to find any café on the way home, including those at home.

Happy walking.

FIFA World Cup

The Soccer World Cup, held in USA, Canada and Mexico, is almost upon us.

The span of interest will range from those who couldn’t care less, and can’t wait for the end of July to come fast enough when it will all be over, to those who are grateful it’s finally here after a long 4-year wait.   Whichever camp you are in why not have some fun by entering CPCW’s World Cup competitions.

The first competition will involve predicting the results and scores of the 72 games in the first round of the World Cup tournament.  Points will be collected for correct results. The entrants who get the most points will share a prize pool as follows:

First place 50%

Second place 30%

Third place 20%

Entering is really easy – you can choose one of three ways to enter depending on how much involvement you would like:

  1. I know nothing about football so let the computer pick my results. (You will probably do as well as anyone who picks the results themselves!) All you need do is supply us your name. Click here to enter.
  1. I am interested in how New Zealand do and would like to pick their results only with the computer picking all other results. Click here to enter using this method
  1. I think I’m an expert and have the time  and will pick some or all the results myself. More details on how this option works here.

Cost to enter is $10 payable to 02-0524-0233091-00. A/C Name:  Churton Park Community Walkers.

If this competition is not for you, watch for the sweepstake we will run in late June when the 32 teams that will emerge to the knockout phase of the tournament are known.

Any questions please contact either Russell Paterson (russellpaterson@icloud.com) or Keith Thomas (keith@yarnbrook.com).

Walk Schedules:   You can look at the walk schedule for May 2026 here.

Reminder:    Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Cancellations:   If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

CPCW Photos

Walking for the Week of May 4th 2026:

Photos this week come from around Churton Park on Wednesday’s walks; from Johnsonville on Thursday; and, on Friday’s punishing walk, from around the hills – and many stairs – of Northland, Kelburn and Highbury where walkers were led by Gary.

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz

Wednesday Walkers:

Rowena caught the group as they gathered outside New World before the starting pistol was fired.
Thanks to Paul Alpe for this photo of the SS preparing for some stairs.
This photo of the PP group is taken near the end of Glenside Road where the walk along Stebbings Stream commences. Courtesy of Mike.
Clint caught the FF group at the same spot as the PP, but looking in the opposite direction. Below is a photo of part of this group in school walking bus formation. This photo was taken by Hue.
Alison provided this photo of her FF group, also taken at the start of the Stebbings Stream walk - obviously a very photogenic spot, made moreso by the four FFs pictured.
A good number of walkers attended the post-match function at Simmer. The inside members were caught enjoying their coffee by Rowena.

Thursday Walkers:

Thursday's team were snapped by Hue on their walk. The cream-coloured buildings stand starkly against the looming sky.

Friday Walkers:

These two Friday "Free Rangers" group's photos were provided by Russell. He has suggested that they are a "Spot the Difference" competition!
Friday's early group, small in number this week, were caught in Ascot St, Thorndon, by Wendy. Red appears to be keen to get going.
The later group was hauled to a halt by Bill for a photograph in the Botanic Gardens amongst the autumn colours.
This stunning photo from Clint, taken in the Botanic Gardens, is certainly a candidate for "Photo of the Week". However it is better suited to be shown in full in the body of the newsletter.
