Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

This week’s banner image was taken by Bill Gaudie on the Friday walk.  The photo was taken on the flanks of Mt Kaukau looking northeast over the harbour.

A Word from...

It was touch and go whether we went ahead with the Wednesday walks this week, but the fresh air and exercise were much enjoyed by the small number of very hardy walkers who braved the weather.  You will note from the photos below that everyone was well rugged up and the skies were obliging and did not unload any of their cargo until walkers were back at their cars.  You will see that there were 7 SS, 9 PP and 10 FF – not bad for such a miserable day.  Well done to all who attended.  Fortunately, the weather was rather more obliging for the Thursday and Friday groups.

An important note:  You will be aware that Keith has done a lot of work on the website and this has included moving our membership details onto a web-based database.  You will soon receive an email from him asking you to click a link in the email which will take you to your details and allow you to update and confirm these details.  We know that your instincts will be to doubt the email, but it is genuine.  Click on the sender’s email to verify Keith’s email (compare it with the details on our webite – click here ) or contact a committee member for help if you have any concerns.  This is a much needed opportunity to ensure that your details are up-to-date – especially your emergency contact person.  Keith has run a trial with a small number of CPCW members and it went without any hitches, so we hope you will find it easy.  Thanks for attending to this promptly when you receive the email.

Walk Details for Wednesday August 26th

This Week’s Walks:

This week the walks are based in Wilton with minor excursions into Northland.  A little bit of feedback from walkers suggests that the PP walks should not include too many steps and the SS walkers prefer to avoid too many hills.  Hopefully the walks this Wednesday will meet your needs.  The walks start from the designated parking at 9:20am.

PP Walk:    A 3.57km loop with the first half in the bush and a return along a street.  There is a bit of a rise to get out of the bush and onto the road.  Can be shortened by heading back to the road at a slightly earlier spot which can be seen on the map.  You can see the walk here.

SS Walk:     A 4.69km loop walk.  A bit shorter than usual, but extending the walk would involve yet another hill.  The walk already includes one not so steep, but quite long, rise.   One section of the walk is on a good quality bush track. (The walk can be extended, if you wish, by turning right into Gloucester Street rather than the left turn that is shown on the map.)  You can see the walk here.

FF Walk:    An 8.12km walk.  A touch longer than usual. Some hills in the residential areas, but the return to the start point is fairly flat.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:    Parking for all three groups is in Walworth Road which is the road between the two halves of Ian Galloway Park.

Coffee:    Nothing booked, but there are Simmer and Thyme back home and others in Crofton Downs, Ngaio, Khandallah and Johnsonville.  Walkers Choice!

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

Walk Schedules:   You can look at the walk schedule for August 2026 here.

Reminder:    Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Cancellations:   If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Walking for the Week of August 17th 2026:

Wednesday’s walkers headed out in Johnsonville and the southern parts of Churton Park; Thursday’s group of six walkers and Red walked in Churton Park; and Friday’s two teams also walked from home territory in Churton Park and then up the Skyline Walkway and across to Broadmeadows from where they headed back home through Johnsonville.  Jane led the group on a seemingly benign walk of 14km, but with an elevation of 480m.  A good workout for all – including a couple of “Free Rangers” who did their own version of the walk to accommodate their needs.  CPCW walks working well for all, as they should.

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz.  Don’t worry about the size of the image – a good quality image at the outset will still look good when reduced in size for the newsletter, but a lower quality image may end up blurry in the newsletter.

Wednesday Walkers:

The SS image this week comes from Stu Rowe and was taken at a much favoured site for CPCW walkers' photos. See below!!
Here is "Arthur" again, this time pictured with the PP group who, like the SS, were no doubt pleased to have completed the climb up from behind Onslow College. Thanks to Keith for this photo - attending as an honorary PP.
Hue kindly provided this photo of the FF members artfully arranged in the McLintock Street roundabout. Hue risked life and limb for this photo!

Thursday Walkers:

And talking of "artful arrangements", the Thursday photographers went above and beyond. This photo, taken by Hue, shows them posed by the sign showing how much they love local walks in the northern suburbs.
Gillian's photo must take the prize for best CPCW art photo of the year - maybe even the decade!! Obviously weeks of Thursday walking keep this group very flexible as they spell out the word "Walk" for their fantastic photo. A big thanks to Gillian.

Friday Walkers:

The siren call of Mt Kaukau is one which CPCW walkers find very hard to resist. A beacon to us all - "Come climb me."
Friday's earlier group were snapped by Clint on the Skyline walkway as they were about to cross Ohariu Valley Road before making another ascent.
Thanks to Baz for this photo of the later group taken on the Skyline zigzag above Churton Park.
And Bill took this photo at the very top of that climb with the snaking Amesbury Drive clear in the distance.
