Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

Our banner photo this week is courtesy of Keith Thomas with this serene scene taken on the Little Akatarawa River on Friday’s walk.

A Word from...

At the time of writing we are in Auckland waiting for the storm to pass before driving home. However, when you read this the storm will have already hit most of the North Island and we will know just how severe it is. I’m sure that everyone will have been well prepared and hopefully everyone is safe, but if anyone is in need please let me know (david.pegram.nz@gmail.com) as I will be able to put you in touch with a nearby Churton Park walker who will be only too willing to lend a hand.

Walk details for Wednesday April 15th

This Week’s Walks:

The walks in Brooklyn ended up being cancelled due to inclement weather.  It was a good decision.  However, school holidays are still on for this coming week and so with reduced traffic still likely, we will try the Brooklyn walks again with all three walks starting at the Tanera Park carpark in Brooklyn.

There are plenty of carparks which support the two football fields that are used in winter.  The carparks are a little bit isolated and, whilst we do not see that this will be a problem, please make sure your vehicle is locked with no valuables in view.  Access to the carpark area is easy if you use the following route:  “Head up Brooklyn Road and at the first intersection on the right turn down into Ohiro Road.  Then head down the hill;  veer left into Tanera Road and then, about 150m down the road, head into the driveway on the right and you will end up at the carpark beside the two football fields.  If you stay on Tanera Road you will miss the entrance to the parking area.”  A map of the route to the parking area is shown here.

These walks will start at 9:20am from the designated starting point which is Tanera Park carpark.

PP:  A 3.78km loop walk with a leg out and back from the loop.  We have tried to avoid having to cross any major road apart from where the crossings are at traffic lights.  The walk takes in Brooklyn’s War memorial.  You can see the walk here.

SS:  A 4.28km loop walk mainly on streets.  The walk maybe a bit shorter than usual, but this is made up for with some reasonable rises. The walk takes in Brooklyn’s War memorial. You can see the walk here.

FF:  A 6.69km figure eight loop walk mainly on streets with all muddy wet tracks avoided, as is the crossing of busy streets apart from where they are supported by lights. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking for all three groups is in the Tanera Park carpark. See the directions and map that are set out above.

Coffee:  As there are no local coffee bars that can take our numbers we have not reserved anywhere.  Coffee is walker’s choice, with Simmer and Thyme always a choice back at home.  There are also about three cafés in Brooklyn if walkers want to try the local brew.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

Walk Schedules:   You can look at the walk schedule for April 2026 here.

Walking for the Week of April 6th 2026:

Weather put the kaibosh on Wednesday’s walks this week, but the Thursday walkers enjoyed a pleasant evening for their walk around home territory in Churton Park.  A small, select group of Friday walkers were led by Gary into the Akatarawa Forest to the biggest northern rata in the country.  (Ed: In my opinion, this is one of the best walks – the magnificent rata, of course, but the bush is diverse; the walk, itself, has variety – some slippery descents, lots of tree roots, walking along the stream bed of the Little Akatarawa River with some small areas  involving slightly testing climbs over slippery rocks – and requires a degree of dexterity; and all away from the madness of the rest of the world!  Thank you, Gary.)

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz

Wednesday Walkers:

Thursday Walkers:

Gillian provided this photo of the Thursday walkers, led by Red.

Friday Walkers:

Bill caught the walkers before they set off on their expedition. It was an absolutely sparkling autumn morning.
Clint caught the walkers along the track. All photos show the lush bush of this walk.
This photo, and the next, were also provided by Clint. It was not a walk for dry feet!
Keith's photo has caught the light reflected on the foliage surrounding the track as it follows the river. Check out the banner image at the top of the page for another of Keith's great images.
Crystal clear reflections in another photo taken by Keith, as is the following photo - though here the tranquillity of the stream has been disturbed by Big Foot!
Arms akimbo and spotlit. Photo courtesy of Keith.
Photos above and below, taken by Clint and Keith respectively, give some indication of the immense size of the northern rata which was the focus of the walk. Gary was no longer hobbled by his injury, though his surgeon may not have envisaged this level of activity so soon on the recovery path!
Keith's nifty little 'tripod', together with the self-timer, allowed him to take this photo of the whole group at the base of the tree. Now, where is Wally? Did she not make it to the tree?
The descent on parts of the homeward journey required caution. Photo courtesy of Bill.
