Photo of the Week
Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.
This week’s photo was taken by Paul Alpe on Wednesday’s walk in QE II Park.
Words from...
Our Convenor
We had a glorious morning on Wednesday with perfect walking weather, lovely coastal views and great company at the picnic. Unfortunately, my prediction at the beginning of the walk that this was the start of an Indian Summer proved to be not true. Only Christine and Duncan were game enough to brave the damp weather for the Thursday evening walk and the Friday walk was cancelled completely.
The first pins went in the map on Wednesday, but the lower North Island roads still have capacity for a few more Churton Park walkers. PP and SS pins would be particularly welcome. Just 20 walks for a PP will get you over the Rimutaka Hill and on to Masterton and, similarly, 25 walks for a SS will get you to Palmerston North. If anyone wants a log sheet for walks let me know. It’s not too late to start a log, if you haven’t done so already, and I’m happy to send out log sheets and the distances of walks completed so far this year if needed. The next opportunities to put pins in the map will be at drinks on Friday 6 March and after the walk on Wednesday 11 March. (Ed: If you wish to use the website-based map provided by Keith, please see below for a repeat of his instructions.)
Due to Easter, drinks for the following month will be on 10 April.
David Pegram
Our Treasurer/Website Administrator:
In addition to the map that David will pin at the regular Friday drinks, we have found a way to have a record of the map on our website. For both maps, walkers will need to submit their walking data at the end of each month by completing a simple form on the website. The only pieces of information required will be your name (taken from a dropdown box) and the distance you have travelled within a range (again from a dropdown box). Once all the data has been received it will appear on a map on the website.
To see how it will look you can click here to see a map containing real names, but fictitious data. Click on the top left of the map and you will see a list of people. Click a person and you will see that person’s position on the map along with their goal. Alternatively, click a pin and the same data appears.
What do I need to do now?
Now you need to set your goal and submit your first entry.
For the first entry you will need to enter your name in the boxes on the form on the website. You will also need to enter your goal from a dropdown list. (For subsequent months your name will also be available from a dropdown box.)
Lastly, you will need to enter how far you have walked in January using the appropriate range from the dropdown box, using the dropdown box appropriate to your goal. You’ll get this information from your log sheets. You can enter your partner/spouse information on the same form, or it can be done separately. You can do all of that here .
And that’s it! Enjoy your walking towards whatever goal you choose.

Walk details for Wednesday March 4th
This Week’s Walks:
Not travelling too far to get to the start point of this week’s walks. All three start from the same point which is Gee Street in Linden. They are variations of previous walks that started from this point.
PP: Version 1 is a 3.98km loop walk, all on footpaths, and Version 2 is a slightly longer walk of 4.32km. Version 1 of the walk requires walkers to cross Tawa Main Road once where there is no pedestrian crossing. Version 2 is the same walk but it is slightly longer as it requires a return to the pedestrian crossing. So, if you don’t wish to cross the relatively busy Tawa Main Road you should stick to Version 2. You can see the walk V1 here and V2 here.
SS: A 6.00km loop walk that covers the starting 300m again on the return. It is a mixture of flat and undulating streets, nothing too steep. You do visit some of the new residential streets of Kenepuru Landing next door to the retirement village. You can see the walk here.
FF: A loop walk of 8.4km. The walk is slightly longer than usual to make up for the lack of “real” hills. It takes you past Whittakers in the light industrial area and also through some of the new housing streets in Kenepuru Landing. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and Plotaroute here.
Parking: Parking is in Gee Street, Tawa, where, as well as a carpark, there is a row of angle parking and further roadside parking on the adjoining Findlay Road. (Heading north on Main Road through Tawa, Gee Street is first on the right after the Linden roundabout. We have parked there quite a few times on earlier walks.)
Coffee: We will let “Daily Fix Café” know that a number of us will be calling for a coffee etc. This is the café within the Outlet Centre, Tawa, previously known as Gloria Janes.
Happy walking.
Russell Paterson

Walking for the Week of February 23rd 2026:
Wednesday’s walk in QEII Park, Paekākāriki, could not have been completed with better conditions – blue sky, sunshine, no wind. Ideal for walking and for the chance to sit adjacent to the beach and enjoy coffee and a chat. Well chosen, Russell!! The photo from the two hardy Thursday walkers, who ventured out in Takarau Park, is testament to their commitment to their walking – determination to progress as far up the North Island in David’s CPCW challenge? Friday’s Walk – sadly, cancelled due to weather!
Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz
