Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

Our banner image this week is courtesy of Keith Thomas and was taken on Friday’s walk near the western end of The Esplanade, Petone.  Check out a couple of other photos below which were taken by Keith along the Te Ara Tupua walkway.

A Word from...

This was yet another 3-0 win for CPCW vs Weather. We had a huge turnout on Wednesday for the walks in Newlands with 19 PP (their largest number since 2022), 18SS and 28FF. We welcomed new walkers Jillian Leslie and her friend, Ann. We hope you enjoyed both the walk and the company on Wednesday and that you will become regular walkers. Christine reported that the 6 Thursday walkers enjoyed a calm, but chilly, evening walking from Churton Park to Johnsonville and back. I believe that Friday’s walk was a first, it being a flat walk organised by Gary. However, it was not without its challenges as it was 15km of slog on a hard surface walking from the eastern end of Petone foreshore to Ngauranga and back. (Ed: ask David why it was even more of a slog for some than others.)  The new harbourside walkway is impressive in its design and particularly for the care and attention that has gone into making an interesting and pleasant walking track. It was yet another calm day and 18 walkers enjoyed both the walk and the misty views across the harbour.

Thank you everyone for your massive contribution to the collection for Wellington Free Ambulance. I appreciate that many people have regular commitments to charities and that your donation to the Wellington Free Ambulance through CPCW is in addition to these. Be that as it may, we collected a total of $396.50. Thank you!

Walk Details for Wednesday June 3rd

This Week’s Walks:

Te Ara Tupua  –  The Ancient Pathway

The new shared walkway/cycleway between Ngauranga and Petone is 4.5km long and many in the walking group are keen to see it and walk it for themselves.  Some have already done it – perhaps, more than once.  The Friday walkers did it this past week, so we are providing two options for the FF this week – a local walk in Johnsonville for those who have already done the walk and the Te Ara Tupua for those who have not.

So, here is a plan for this Wednesday’s walk.  It is a bit more complicated than normal, so please take time to read through to the end.  There are some logistic issues getting to and from the walk, so we are providing the following options:

Parking:              At Alex Moore Park and then walk to the Johnsonville bus hub.

Catch a Number 1 bus and alight at the stop just past the traffic lights at the bottom of Ngauranga Gorge.  To avoid crowding the bus, we suggest that the groups gather separately:

SS/FF (Te Ara Tupua)        9.10am bus at the Johsonville Hub

PP                                        9.20am bus at the Johsonville Hub

FF (Jville walk)                  Meet at Alex Moore Park at 9.20am.

The buses arrive at the Ngauranga stop 9 minutes after departure from Jville.  We suggest that you walk back to the start of the walk by going through the tunnel beneath the motorway that carries traffic from the Hutt.  There is another tunnel which takes traffic to the effluent outflow, but there is no footpath – and it does have something of a distinctive aroma about it!  When you reach the Petone end of the walkway you will see a sign that directs you to Petone Station – it will take you under the roadway and there is no need to cross the Esplanade.

PP:         Walk the length of Te Ara Tupua and on to Petone Station (a total walk of 5.8km which, while a little longer than normal, is all flat and on formed walkways/roads).  From here you can catch a train back to Wellington City.  Trains leave at 20 minute intervals from Petone at 13, 33 and 53 minutes past the hour arriving into Wellington 12 minutes later.  You then have the option of having a coffee at the Trax Café at the station before heading home via either the Johsonville train line or a Number 1 bus.  Here is the link.

SS:         A 7.1km walk which is all on formed walkways/roads and is flat.  Walk the length of Te Ara Tupua and when you reach the Petone foreshore, take the right-hand track along The Esplanade as far as the traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossing near Petone Wharf, cross The Esplanade and then walk up Victoria Street, left into Jackson Street and then on to Hutt Road where you can safely cross to Petone Station.  See notes for PP above for details of train times on the Hutt Line. Alternatively, you may prefer to follow the PP route above and take your time to read the informative signs en route.  Here is the link.

FF:          If you wish to walk the length of Te Ara Tupua, then we suggest that you meet with the SS group at the Johnsonville bus hub and take the 9.10am bus to Ngauranga.  You can then either follow the SS or PP routes above back to Petone Station.  We suggest that you walk independently of the SS so that there is no conflict of pace.

For those FF who do not want to repeat Te Ara Tupua, we have a local walk as an alternative.  It is a 6.79km loop – a new walk that is a mixture of several Johnsonville walks that we have used in the past.  Over half the walk is on tracks and walkways, the rest on streets.  There are some reasonable climbs, as is the norm.  You can see the walk on Mapometer  here and on Plotaroute here.

Coffee:                 Trax at Wellington Railway Station

Or options back in Johnsonville or Churton Park.

Or you have various options available in Petone if you prefer to enjoy a coffee before heading home:

La Bella Italia and Revive Espresso in Nevis Street

Puku Pies & Kai which is part of the Bunnings Petone complex

So, lots of permutations and combinations for you to choose from!  As always, walk in a group and, if you wish to peel off and do your own thing, ensure that you have told others in your group of your intentions.

Notes:

  • For the safety of walkers, we do not recommend that you get off the train at Ngauranga on the journey home. The traffic light cycles are not yet set up for pedestrians and you will have to chance the traffic to get across the road to catch a bus up to Johnsonville.  Much better to travel on to Wellington where you have the options of bus or train back home.
  • Te Ara Tupua is a combined walking and cycling path. While the path has demarcations, there is nothing to stop you walking across the cycling path if you walk 3 or 4 abreast which is probably not wise.  Cyclists may well travel quickly – be aware!
  • Don’t forget your Goldcard or Snapper card.
Check out the photos of Friday’s walk for what you have ahead of you.

Happy walking.

FIFA World Cup - Last Chance!

We have more than enough numbers for the World Cup Competition to run, but there is still time to enter before the games begin.   Random selection is by far the most common entry form, although a couple of “experts” have waded through all 72 games and think they have the answers. We even have an entrant using AI!  You can find out more about the competition and how easy it is to enter below.

The first competition will involve predicting the results and scores of the 72 games in the first round of the World Cup tournament.  Points will be collected for correct results. The entrants who get the most points will share a prize pool as follows:

First place 50%

Second place 30%

Third place 20%

Entering is really easy – you can choose one of three ways to enter depending on how much involvement you would like:

  1. I know nothing about football so let the computer pick my results. (You will probably do as well as anyone who picks the results themselves!) All you need do is supply us your name. Click here to enter.
  1. I am interested in how New Zealand do and would like to pick their results only with the computer picking all other results. Click here to enter using this method
  1. I think I’m an expert and have the time  and will pick some or all the results myself. More details on how this option works here.

Cost to enter is $10 payable to 02-0524-0233091-00. A/C Name:  Churton Park Community Walkers.

If this competition is not for you, watch for the sweepstake we will run in late June when the 32 teams that will emerge to the knockout phase of the tournament are known.

Any questions please contact either Russell Paterson (russellpaterson@icloud.com) or Keith Thomas (keith@yarnbrook.com).

Walking for the Week of May 25th 2026:

Wednesday walkers enjoyed familiar routes around Newlands; Thursday’s route was from Churton Park to Johnsonville and back; and Gary led the Friday team from the eastern end of The Esplanade, Petone, along the foreshore and then along Te Ara Tupua to Ngauranaga and return on a 15.5km walk.

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz

Wednesday Walkers:

Thanks to Rowena for these two photos of walkers gathering on Ladbrooke Road before heading off in three directions.
The SS photo is courtesy of Stu Rowe. How many of the group had to be held back from venturing into the Danger Zone for a frisson of excitement!!
Two photos of the FF this week thanks to Hue (photo above) and Margaret (photo below).

Thursday Walkers:

Thank you, again, to Hue for the photo of Thursday's group.

Friday Walkers:

Bill managed to snap this photo towards the Ngauranga end of Te Ara Tupua when the early and late groups passed each other.
These two photos are courtesy of Keith - the one above showing the only significant hill along the walkway! There is much along the route that is worth taking to time to ponder... Check out Keith's other photo at the top of the page.
