Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

Our banner image this week comes from Clint Davis and was taken in the Remutaka Forest Park on Friday’s walk.  Clint’s photo shows the bush resplendent in diffused sunlight.

A Word from...

Once again the weather allowed all three walks to proceed this week. There was a good turn out on Wednesday for a walk in rather wintry conditions in the Hutt Valley. It was still cold the follwing evening for the Thursday walk in Newlands. On Friday spring eventually arrived with sunny, warm and still conditions for a walk in the Remutaka Forest Park accompanied by an impressive number of grey warblers and the occasional bellbird. Fingers crossed for another clean sweep this coming week.

On Friday you will have received a simple questionnaire enquiring what your preference is for a mid-winter function. If you did not reply immediately now would be a good time to scroll down through your inbox, find the email and reply with either option 1,2 or 3.

Walk Details for Wednesday October 14th

This Week’s Walks:

“Local Walks” this week.  All walks are similar to local walks of the past but hopefully they may take you down a street or walkway that you haven’t walked along before.  Walks start from the designated parking area at 9:20am.

PP Walk:    A 3.78km loop walk that takes in the long valley parallel to Melksham Drive, then heads up a zigzag track to a major road that allows for a return to the carpark via other residential streets.  Some minor hill work; just take your time.  You can see the walk here.

SS Walk:  A 6.19km loop walk.  This walk is one carried out in the past, but it has been reversed.  Takes in the residential streets and also the track in the valley. You can see the walk here.

FF Walk:  A 7.09km loop walk that takes in the valley, like the other groups, but also adds a few more residential streets.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  At home so parking is the New World Carpark and nearby streets.  Use the parks as far away from the supermarket entrance as you can, thereby leaving the closer areas for shoppers.

Coffee:  Nothing planned, but Simmer is right there and Thyme is only a short drive away. With a bit of luck the three walks should end at differing times and keep queues to a reasonable length.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

Walk Schedules:   You can look at the walk schedule for October 2026 here.

Reminder:    Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Cancellations:   If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Walking for the Week of October 5th 2026:

This week we have a photos of the SS and PP groups on walks around Petone with the FF missing in action; the Thursday walkers owning their regular seat in the Newlands mall; and a small Friday group who were led out by Jane on a 12km loop walk from the Catchpool Reserve along the Ōrongorongo Track and back, via some uphill and downhill tramping, along the Cattle Ridge and Butcher tracks.  The group took time, as they descended the Butcher Track, to remember Ron who died on this track six years ago.

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz.  Don’t worry about the size of the image – a good quality image at the outset will still look good when reduced in size for the newsletter, but a lower quality image may end up blurry in the newsletter.

Wednesday Walkers:

Thank you to Peter Nalder who provided another "break out" photo taken during our previous week's walks in Maupuia.
Our PP team were snapped by Rowena this week.
And thanks for this photo of the SS group. The photo was sent through by Stu, but there is a mystery person behind the lens!

Thursday Walkers:

A very relaxed group of Thursday walkers photographed by Brian Alderson. Judging from the smiles, the group are either relieved to sit down during a gruelling walk or this Thursday's walk has been more relaxed than normal!

Friday Walkers:

A very small group of Friday walkers, this week. Snapped on the Ōrongorongo Track by Clint.
