Photo of the Week
Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.
Rowena Rowe provided this week’s banner image taken along the Te Ara Tupua walkway on Wednesday’s walk.
A Word from...
Churton Park Walkers were out in force again this week. Many Wednesday walkers enjoyed Te Ara Tupua Walkway, the new footpath along the harbour, (which had the bonus of a harbourside train ride for the return journey!). The Thursday evening temperatures were fortunately higher than the frosty start to the day for the Thursday walkers’ circuit of Churton Park. The Friday walkers had an absolutely stunning winter day for their demanding figure eight walk which included the Elsdon steps and Colonial Knob.
This is my last newsletter for a while as Wayne and I leave for an extended trip to Europe on Monday. I am extremely grateful to Bill, who has so willingly ‘taken over the reins’ while I am away, and to the rest of the committee who keep the well oiled machinery of the walking group running smoothly week in week out.
I’ll be keeping in touch while I am away and will be looking forward to catching up with everyone on my return.

Walk Details for Wednesday June 17th
This Week’s Walks:
Please note that the SS group has a different parking venue to the PP and FF groups.
PP: A 4.28km loop walk that heads north towards Churton Park and returns via a parallel route. The return to Nairnville Park takes in the interesting Tarikaka Street where the houses were built sometime well in the past for railway workers. The frontages etc of these houses have preservation orders. The walk has minor rises and falls, but nothing that could be described as steep. See the walk here.
SS: A 5.26km loop walk that starts at the Khandallah Swimming Pool carpark (at the top of Woodmancote Road), heads into the reserve and then across to Clark Street and onto tracks that lead to another track up to Satara Crescent. The walk then heads back to the cars via other local streets. See the walk here. The photo below shows the entrance to the new part of the track in an area called Tui Lawn. The track is noted on the post as the Korimako Track. It is in good condition. Trust you all can find it.
FF: A 6.6km loop walk, also taking in the new track that leads to Satara Crescent, then some other local Khandallah streets and walkways. The walk includes some reasonable rises. See the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.
Parking: The SS parking is the carpark at the end of Woodmancote Street. As only the SS walkers are parking here we trust there will be more than enough parking for them.
Both the PP and FF groups will park at Nairnville Park and the nearby streets.
Coffee: Nothing has been booked so it is walker’s choice.
Happy walking.
Russell Paterson
Walk Schedules: You can look at the walk schedule for June 2026 here.
Reminder: Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.
Cancellations: If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Walking for the Week of June 8th 2026:
Photos this week reflect, once again, the great asset that is the newly opened Te Ara Tupua which was walked by a sizeable group of PP, SS and FF. Most of the FF group, who had walked this route on a Friday a couple of weeks earlier, did a local walk around the streets of Johnsonville. Thursday night’s photo is from a walk around Churton Park and photos from Friday reflect the heights that were scaled on a walk up to the top of Colonial Knob and through parts of Spicer Forest. Jane, who led the walk, was channeling her “inner Gary” and succeeded magnificently!!
Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz
