Newsletter - 4th October 2026

Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

Our banner image this week comes from Bill Gaudie.  The kōwhai were in full bloom around Naenae when the Friday walkers visited this week.

A Word from...

This week saw Churton Park walkers in Miramar, Newlands and Naenae, stretching their legs, admiring the views and enjoying the company of fellow walkers. Of particular note were two Friday Walkers who, deciding that the proposed walk was too short, left in advance of the main group in order to complete an extended walk on the ridge above Naenae. In future this group will be known as the Ultra Friday Walkers. The walking week ended with well deserved drinks and lots of conversation at the Johnsonville Club.

Also stretching their legs are those Churton Park Walkers who have taken up the challenge of walking the North Island. You can check their progress on the CPCW website – this is a quick link.  If you scroll through the map you should be able to click on each of the blue location pins to find out the name of the walker and their target destination.  (NB:  It sometimes takes a few seconds for the map to download on this webpage – don’t be too hasty.  Then click on the icon at the far right of the black horizontal bar – “View larger map.”  Ed)

Walk Details for Wednesday October 7th

This Week’s Walks:

Off to Petone for the three walks this week – all three are walks we have carried out and enjoyed in the past.  No hills and good surfaces and, it still being school holidays, then probably no traffic problems.

The walks start from the designated parking area at 9:20am.

PP Walk:    A 4.71km walk which is on the flat and takes in some of the older residential areas of Petone and also uses the riverside track along the bank of the Hutt River.  You can see the walk here.

SS Walk:  A 6.56km loop that heads off using the walkway through the Shandon Golf Course and then into part of the residential area of Petone and returning via the banks of the Hutt River. A flat walk with good surfaces.  You can see the walk here.

FF Walk:  An 8.52km loop walk that heads off by following the banks of the Waiwhetu Stream; then turns and heads directly to the Hutt River via Whites Line East; and then along the bank back to the cars.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking is one of our usual spots which is from about halfway along and towards the eastern end of Marine Parade.  Accessed off the Esplanade with a right turn into Kirkcaldy Street.  (Alongside the Gull Service Station.)

Coffee:  We have told Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Petone that a good number of walkers will be arriving for a coffee and, perhaps, a snack.  They cope with our numbers very well.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

Walking for the Week of September 28th 2026:

No need to consider cancellations this past week – the weather was kind to us.  As you will see from the photos, the Wednesday walkers enjoyed great views exploring Maupuia and Miramar; Newlands was kind to the Thursday group; and the cloud did not detract from Gary’s walk into the bush behind Naenae and up the hill on a 13km loop (15+ for the Ultra-Friday walkers!)

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz.  Don’t worry about the size of the image – a good quality image at the outset will still look good when reduced in size for the newsletter, but a lower quality image may end up blurry in the newsletter.

Wednesday Walkers:

How about that for a backdrop?? Here are members of the SS group on the Maupuia walkway. Thanks to Stu Rowe for this photo.
By comparison, here is a group of FF giving up as they are caught escaping from Mt Crawford Prison - except for Barbara who is not at all intimidated by the pathetic specimen behind the camera! That specimen being your editor!!!
Thank you to Alex Ng for this photo of the second FF group - once again capturing Wellington harbour and cloudscape.
And thank you to Anita for this photo of the second group of escapees from Mt Crawford. Corrections definitely need to get their act together!

Thursday Walkers:

Strange to see the Thursday walkers out in daylight this week. Thank you to Brian A for snapping the group in the Newlands mall during their walk around the suburb.

Friday Walkers:

Thank you to Clint for this photo of the later group of Friday walkers at the highest point of their walk - the Fitzherbert transmission tower. Below is another photo of the group taken at the same spot by Bill, but looking in a different direction.
Another photo of the group, taken by Bill, as they come off the hill, cross the stream and prepare to enjoy a flat stroll back to the cars.
