Newsletter - 27th September 2026

Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

Thank you to Mike Drain for this week’s banner image taken during Wednesday’s walk in Whitby.  The blossom-laden trees, taken on the day of the spring equinox, belie the temperature!

A Word from...

On the twenty-third day of September in the Year of Our Lord two thousand and twenty-six, twenty-one brave souls (5PP, 8SS & 16FF) set out on a mission of Adventure and Discovery, fearless of whatever the weather gods might be cooking up for them. The group was in high spirits most of the way, although, nearing the destination, I overheard from one gloomy Wit, “by the look of that Long White Cloud we’re in for some rain”.  He wasn’t wrong but, when the rain eventually struck, the group ploughed on with Endeavour, New Zeal and Resolution.  All arrived safely, if a little damp, but dried out, somewhat incongruously, at Columbus Coffee.

The Friday walkers continued this theme, paying homage to the ‘mother country’ by visiting Mounts Alfred, Albert and Victoria. The Thursday walkers brought matters right up to date, surveying the current extent of the settlements of Wellington and Petone from a vantage point in Woodridge.

Walk Details for Wednesday September 30th

This Week’s Walks:

It is school holidays again and, believing that this means less traffic on the roads, we will try for three Miramar walks.  All three walks are new, but really only variations of ones we have completed in the past.  The walks start from the designated parking area at 9:20am.

PP Walk:    A 4.79km walk which is generally all on the flatter areas of Miramar.  You can see the walk here.

SS Walk:  A 5.60km loop with a bit of a hill heading up to and and around the old Mt Crawford prison.  The hill is not too steep, but it is long.  You can see the walk here.

FF Walk:  A 7.08km loop walk going past the old Mt Crawford prison and down the old road access (now a bit of a track.). Includes a good climb up to the prison. You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:  Parking is on either side of Darlington Road in the general area of the vehicle entrance to Miramar Park.  There should be adequate parking for all, but keep clear of the vehicle crossings.

Coffee:  Nothing is booked, but there are many cafés in the area. These include Pestle & Mortar Café in Darlington Road; The Bun Bakery and Coffee Shop in Park Road, as is Nicolette’s; and, in Miramar Ave, the Cutting Sports Café and the Chocolate Frog Café (Palmers Garden Centre).  Of course, there are Thyme and Simmer back at home.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

Walk Schedules:   You can look at the walk schedule for September 2026 here.

Reminder:    Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Cancellations:   If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Walking for the Week of September 21st 2026:

David has provided us with a very literary description of this week’s walks.  (Ed: My absence on Wednesday was due to ‘indolence, not incapacity’!!  I shall do better.)  So it seems that walkers enjoyed their wandering in Whitby on Wednesday (or most of it!); Woodridge walking on Thursday; and Jane led the crew of 10 + Red on a walk of nearly 18km that encompassed much of the Southern Walkway, some of the City to Sea and various streets and paths in between in a loop from Island Bay.

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz.  Don’t worry about the size of the image – a good quality image at the outset will still look good when reduced in size for the newsletter, but a lower quality image may end up blurry in the newsletter.

Wednesday Walkers:

Thank you to Mike for his photo of the PP group. Take a look at the banner image for Mike's photo of the spring blossom.
Another small, and select, group of walkers with the SS group photographed by Andy.
After a few weeks of smaller numbers, the FF managed to outnumber the PP/SS combined. Thanks to Russell for this photo.

Thursday Walkers:

Thank you to Brian A for this photo of the Thursday group.

Friday Walkers:

Bill provided the Friday photos this week. The above photo shows most of the group at the top of Te Raekaihau Park on the south coast. It looks like Red, licking his lips, might be preparing to make a meal of the photographer. His mum, featured in the photo below, decided that any seat at the top of a hill was worth using!
For those of you who have previously walked up (or down) the scree-covered slope from Alexandra Road, Mt Victoria, to the Byrd Memorial - here is the newly completed walkway. It was generally agreed that the slope and surface are not much of an improvement - at least the old surface had patches of grass to anchor your feet!
An action shot of our esteemed leader making a fast descent on Mt Victoria.
