Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

There were no submissions this week for “Photo of the Week”, so I have descended into the realm of online theft!  This photo was taken by one of our group of excellent CPCW photographers, Keith Thomas, on Friday’s walk one week earlier.  Taken in Belmont Regional Park, the photo looks north over the viaduct on Transmission Gully.

A Word from...

There was no mistaking this week that Wayne and I have arrived back to spring in Wellington. The walks on Wednesday were a wee bit breezy, Thursday’s walk was cancelled due to gusty rain and the Friday walkers enjoyed calm and sunny conditions. Three consecutive, but contrasting days, typical of spring!

The CPCW Committee met this week and, amongst other news, I was delighted to get such positive reports of the Anniversary Dinner. Also, Rowena has plans well underway for the Christmas Lunch. If you have not made a note of the date already it is Wednesday 25 November. Details about time, transport and payment will be put in the newsletter closer to the time.

Walk Details for Wednesday September 23rd

This Week’s Walks:

Whitby this coming Wednesday and three Andy Dunn Whitby specials for the occasion. Thanks Andy!  The walks start from the Adventure Park carpark at 9:20am.

PP Walk:    A 3.69km loop walk along part of the shoreline of Whitby Lake and then a mixture of tracks, walkways and residential roads with only 73m of rise. You can see the walk here.

SS Walk:  A 6.53km loop walk that also uses a mixture of tracks, walkways and residential roads.  Elevation is a moderate 159m.  You can see the walk here.

FF Walk:  An 8.41 km loop that is similar to the SS group’s walk but heading further into the maze of residential streets. Although there is only a rise of 150m, this should increase as the FF group always take wrong turnings every week.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and on Plotaroute here.

Parking:    Parking for all three groups is in the Adventure Park carpark which is accessed from Discovery Drive;  the entry is almost opposite the Whitby Shopping Village.

Coffee:  We will warn Columbus Coffee, Mitre 10 Mega, Porirua that a good number of us will be coming for a coffee and perhaps a snack.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

Walk Schedules:   You can look at the walk schedule for September 2026 here.

Reminder:    Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Cancellations:   If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Walking for the Week of September 14th 2026:

Wednesday walkers headed out from Nairnville Park in different directions to explore parts of Khandallah and Ngaio.  Thursday’s walk was cancelled due to the very heavy rain; Christine would probably have ventured out into the deluge anyway on her own, but she is currently overseas.  Friday’s walkers enjoyed a 13km walk with a modest 385m elevation gain.  Keith led them out on a loop from Raroa that encompassed a number of local suburbs and included a climb up the Amritsar Street steps – always a challenge for some!

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz.  Don’t worry about the size of the image – a good quality image at the outset will still look good when reduced in size for the newsletter, but a lower quality image may end up blurry in the newsletter.

Wednesday Walkers:

These two images of the SS group are courtesy of Russell. Is this photo, below, at Awarua Street Station indicative of cheating???? (Were these walkers heading to or from a recently departed train?)
Thank you, Hue, for your photo of the FF group .

While the PP group was out in some numbers this week, they are not represented photographically this week.

Thursday Walkers:

Heavy rain kept the Thursday walkers indoors this week.

Friday Walkers:

Graham captured the earlier group , above, on the path down from Wakely Street, Newlands, to the bottom of the Ngauranga Gorge. It is well worth a visit if you are looking for great views out over the harbour and you can always catch a bus back up the gorge.
Graham also snapped the group at the top of the Amritsar Street steps - a guaranteed resting (recovery) spot!!
Bill provided this photo of the later group refuelling beside the UGo petrol station on Hutt Road.
Thanks to Keith for his photo of the group - again taken at the end of Amritsar Street.
