Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

This week’s photo was taken by Alison Hannah on Wednesday’s walk.  Her photo shows the Seaview Marina taken from above Point Howard.

A word from...

The enthusiasm of the Wednesday walkers for tackling the Wainuiomata Hill Challenge was quite remarkable, so much so that several groups of walkers set off early to ‘get ahead of the game’.  Unfortunately, this resulted in very few people actually being present for the start of the walk at 9.20am.  Also, a number of people who had arrived in time for the challenge felt somewhat abandoned by their walking group and daunted by the task of catching them up.  I’m hopeful, though, that this was a ‘one-off’ and we will be back into a routine of meeting all together at 9.20am for future Wednesday walks.

The Thursday evening walkers showed equal enthusiasm and determination in walking 6.5km in the rain.  However, the Friday walkers took the option of a lie-in rather than chance the grim weather forecast for the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park.

Wednesday Walkers

Wednesday was the annual Wainui Hill Challenge, cancelled in 2024 due to bad weather.  Many walkers took the opportunity to walk up the hill road to the lookout – some continuing around in a loop through Point Howard and back to the cars, others returning down the hill road.  Other walkers stayed on the flat.

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz

PPs:  Thank you to Mike Drain for his photo of the PPs gathering before setting out on their walk.  The images of way-points on the walk are courtesy of Janet Tyson.

SSs:  Thanks to Rowena Rowe for the first two images of the SSs out on their walk and to Alison Hannah for the cameo shot of the group at the top of Point Howard where it seems that the altitude has gone to their heads!  Alison also provided the photo of some local flora – Liberia grandiflora, she advises, for you gardening fans!

FFs:  The two groups of FFs were snapped by Helen Paterson and Bill Gaudie.  Gay Hoffman captured the two individuals who treated the hill climb as a real challenge (rumours have been spread about some running), but obviously they needed a little sit-down on the way back.  Or was there some cheating involved – Gold Cards used on a Metlink service to spare the knees?  Gay also took the photo of the flowering rata in Point Howard.

Thursday Walkers

Thank you to Gillian Mills for this photo of the Thursday walkers looking a little damp!  There is little that will stop this group from walking!

Friday Walkers

Friday morning dawned with some impressive lightning, thunder and heavy rain.  In deference to the health and welfare of the Friday walkers, Gary cancelled!
