Photo of the Week

Each week we will post an image taken by one of our walkers of a scene they spotted on a walk. Generally these images should not include photos of any walkers. Please send any images to info@cpcw.co.nz noting photo of the week in the subject line.

This week’s photo was taken by Mike Drain on Wednesday’s walk in Seatoun.  Wellington on a great day!

Words from...

Our Convenor:

This has been another successful week for the walking group with Churton Park Walkers Striding out in Seatoun on Wednesday, Charging around Churton Park on Thursday and Haring through the Hutt on Friday. With so much activity, and with the prospect of hot and windless weeks ahead, I’d like to remind everyone of the importance of carrying water when we walk. In fact, not only carrying water, but also drinking it in order to stay hydrated.

David Pegram

Our Social Co-Ordinator:

To celebrate the first of our monthly CPCW drinks for this year, we are going to gift an amazing 2026 Michelle Bellamy calendar to one of our walkers – see image above.

Michelle Bellamy is a contemporary New Zealand landscape artist who is inspired by the land, back-country and outdoor culture of New Zealand.  The artwork in this calendar is simply stunning.  Some of you may have walked or visited the scenes of her work.  You can see a sample of her work at bellamygallery.co.nz.

To be eligible for this gift just come for drinks at the Johnsonville Club on Friday 6 February. You will be assigned a random number which will enter you into the draw.  The draw is expected to take place at approx. 5.30pm.

Rowena Rowe

Our Treasurer/Website Administrator:

In addition to the map that David will pin at the regular Friday drinks, we have found a way to have a record of the map on our website.  For both maps, walkers will need to submit their walking data at the end of each month by completing a simple form on the website.  The only pieces of information required will be your name (taken from a dropdown box) and the distance you have travelled within a range (again from a dropdown box). Once all the data has been received it will appear on a map on the website.

To see how it will look you can click here to see a map containing real names, but fictitious data. Click on the top left of the map and you will see a list of people. Click a person and you will see that person’s position on the map along with their goal. Alternatively, click a pin and the same data appears.

What do I need to do now?

Now you need to set your goal and submit your first entry.

For the first entry you will need to enter your name in the boxes on the form on the website. You will also need to enter your goal from a dropdown list. (For subsequent months your name will also be available from a dropdown box.)

Lastly, you will need to enter how far you have walked in January using the appropriate range from the dropdown box, using the dropdown box appropriate to your goal.  You’ll get this information from your log sheets.  You can enter your partner/spouse information on the same form, or it can be done separately.  You can do all of that here .

And that’s it!  Enjoy your walking towards whatever goal you choose.

Walk details for Wednesday February 4th

This Week’s Walks:

We avoid the city traffic this week with all the walks in Karori. (Only school traffic from half the schools also.) The three walks will all start from the Samuel Parnell Parking area at 9:20am.  The walks are new variations of previous walks.

PPs:  A 4.14km loop walk taking in the residential streets of Karori.  You can see the walk here.

SSs:  A 6.44km loop walk also taking in the residential streets of Karori.  You can see the walk here.

FFs:  A 7.27km loop walk heading further into the residential streets of Karori.  You can see the walk on Mapometer here and Plotaroute here.

Parking:  The parking is roadside along Samuel Parnell Road and the adjoining streets.  Parking that we have used several times in the past.  Generally enough parking for all of us.

Coffee:  We have informed the Karori Park Café that a number of us will be calling for a coffee.  There are of course Simmer and Thyme back home.

Happy walking.

Russell Paterson

Walk Schedules:   You can look at the walk schedule for February 2026 here.

Reminder:    Please ensure that you inform your group’s leader if you leave a walk partway through.

Cancellations:   If the walks are cancelled an email will be sent out as early as possible but definitely before 8:00am.

Walking for the Week of January 26th 2026:

Our Wednesday walkers headed to Seatoun on a glorious Wellington day.  Thursday’s crew walked locally in Churton Park.  Friday’s team were shepherded by Keith on a walk of some 13km on a circuit encompassing Cannon Point and the Birchville Dam in Upper Hutt.

Please try and remember to take a group photo and send it to info@cpcw.co.nz

It is great to see a good number of PPs out this week. The photo is courtesy of Janet Tyson.
Rowena also provided the photo of the SSs taken at the Ataturk Memorial. The numbers of SSs out walking are returning to normal levels.
This great seascape, taken at the base of the Seatoun wharf during the Wednesday walk, comes from Mike Drain. Please also check out Mike's other photo at the top of the newsletter.
The two photos, above and below, of the Thursday walking team are courtesy of Gillian Mills.
Alison provided this photo of her and Pauline, the self-titled MI6 Friday group - today minus 4! This photo was taken beside the Birchville Dam.
Alison also provided this image taken during the walk.
Margaret Ellis kindly provided this photo of the second group of Friday walkers, again taken at the Birchville Dam.
And another shot of the FFs on track taken by Keith.
Hue captured the second group on the way back to the cars. In the shot above they are crossing the Hutt River and in the shot below walking back along the river bank.
This image of the Birchville Dam was taken by Sue Fish walking in the early group.
